1. General Introduction
The Multi – Purpose Device (MPD) is a crucial tool in rope rescue operations, integrating multiple functions such as pulley, descent control, protection device, and ratchet function. It is designed to handle various tasks during rescue work, ensuring the safety and efficiency of operations.
2. Pre – use Checks
- Inspection of the Device: Before using the MPD, visually inspect it for any signs of damage, such as cracks, deformations, or excessive wear. Check the moving parts like the pulley, ratchet, and braking mechanism to ensure they operate smoothly.
- Rope Compatibility: Ensure that the rope diameter is compatible with the MPD. The rope should also be in good condition, free from frays, cuts, or other defects.
3. Installation
- Threading the Rope: Thread the rope through the MPD according to the marked path on the device. For the braking function, the rope usually needs to be looped in an “S – shape” around the braking device to increase friction. Make sure the rope is seated properly in all the grooves and around the pulleys.
- Connecting to the Harness: Connect the MPD to the rescuer’s or the victim’s harness using a reliable connector. Double – check that the connection is secure and the locking mechanism of the connector is engaged.
4. Descent Operation
- Positioning and Grip: The operator stands in a stable position facing the descent direction. Hold the running end of the rope firmly with both hands, keeping the body slightly tilted backward.
- Speed Control: Control the descent speed by adjusting the tension of the rope on the braking device. Loosening the rope slightly allows for a faster descent, while tightening it slows down the descent. For heavier loads or a more precise speed control, the rope can be wrapped around the secondary friction post to increase friction.
- Attention during Descent: Maintain balance during the descent and avoid sudden movements or collisions with obstacles. Continuously monitor the MPD and the rope for any abnormal noises, excessive wear, or malfunction of the braking system.
5. Ascent Operation
- Setting up the Ratchet: Set the ratchet mechanism of the MPD according to the lifting requirements. The ratchet is used to prevent the rope from slipping during the ascent, ensuring the safety of the load or the rescued person.
- Lifting Action: Stand in a stable stance and pull the rope alternately to lift the load or the rescued person. Each time the rope is pulled, ensure that the ratchet locks the rope securely. When a pause is needed, use the parking brake device to fix the rope.
- Communication and Coordination: Keep communication with the person being lifted to ensure a smooth and safe operation. Pay attention to your own posture and the force applied to avoid injury.
6. Using as a Protection Device
- Installation in the Protection System: Install the MPD in the main rope system between the rescuer/victim and the anchor point. Connect it properly to form a complete protection loop.
- Activation of Protection: In case of an emergency, such as rope breakage or failure of the main descent device, the braking mechanism of the MPD will automatically engage to prevent the fall of the rescuer or the victim. Rescuers should be familiar with the triggering mechanism of the MPD’s protection function and stay calm in an emergency situation.
7. Maintenance and Precautions
- Regular Cleaning: After each use, clean the MPD with a clean, soft cloth to remove dirt, dust, and debris. For hard – to – clean stains, use a mild detergent, but avoid using corrosive cleaners.
- Lubrication: Regularly lubricate the moving parts, such as the pulley axles, ratchet teeth, and the moving parts of the braking mechanism. Use a suitable lubricant for metal parts, and be careful not to over – lubricate, as excess lubricant can attract dirt.
- Storage: Store the MPD in a dry, well – ventilated place to prevent rusting. Avoid storing it with heavy objects on top to prevent deformation.
